Nash, John V.
John V. Nash, 84, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010, in Mercy Medical Center. Services: 1 p.m. Friday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home and after 12:30 p.m. Friday at the chapel. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors include his children, John (Julie) Nash of Reno, Texas, Tim (Arlene) Nash of Charlottesville, Va., and Roxanne Nash of Cedar Rapids; his stepchildren; Kathy (Bob) Kaufman of Cedar Rapids, David (Cheryl) Potter of San Bernardino, Calif., Kelly (Bruce) Trumpold of Amana, and Brian Potter of Glendora, Calif.; his grandchildren, Scott (Amiee) Nash, and Patti Nash and Kevin Nash; his stepgrandchildren, Rob Kaufman, Chase Potter, Brenton Potter, Westley Potter, Ricky Potter, Nicole Trumpold, Chelsea Trumpold and Luke Potter; and a great-grandchild, Guthrie Kelele Nash.
He was preceded in death by his wives, Mercedes Gorman and Rebecca Potter; a son, Gary Dean Nash; stepson, Stan Potter; and a granddaughter, Holli Nash.
John was born Nov. 14, 1925, in Cedar Rapids, the son of John and Marie Armbright Nash Sr. He married Mercedes Gorman in 1947, and later divorced. He then married Rebecca Potter on May 18, 1973 in Cedar Rapids. John worked for the United States Government in the Defense Contract Management Agency retiring in 1980. He graduated from Franklin High School in 1944, attended Coe College and Trinity University, San Antonio, Texas in 1950 with a B.S. Degree.
John became a Mason in 1956, and El Kahir Shriner in 1966. He was a member of El Kahir Shrine Drum Corps from 1956 to 1987 and was honored to serve as director, drum major and music arranger for 18 years. He was a member of the Shrine Concert Band from 1988 to 2005. His hobbies were fishing, hunting, jewelry making, gardening and teaching beginner bugle and trumpet. John served in the U.S. Navy as a Navy Sonarman 3rd Class Petty Officer at Submarine Base No. 128 at Pearl Harbor Territory in Hawaii. John was a long-standing member of the V.F.W. Post 788 in Cedar Rapids and felt honored to play funeral taps for the American Legion and V.F.W. funerals and Memorial Day services.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Mercy Medical Center for all the loving care they gave to John.
