Darrell Leslie Marks, 90, passed away Dec. 29, 2014, in Mesa, Ariz. Services were Friday, Jan. 2, 2015, at VA National Cemetery of Arizona, with a Celebration of Life
at Sunland Springs Village in Mesa.
Surviving are his wife, Myra; five children: son, Larry and Kathy (Gliem) of Show Low, Ariz.; daughter, Beverly (Marks) Wright and husband Donn of Oroville, Calif.; son, David of Mesa; son, Charles and wife Betty (Hingeten) of Anamosa; and son, Robert Marks and Sue Bornaise of Mesa; brother, Robert and wife Maralyn Marks of Salem, S.D.; sister, Reta (Marks) Joseph of Fulton, Texas; nine grandchildren, Danny Marks, Dana Starck, Michele Marks, Lindsay Blanchard, Gina Marks, Erik Marks, Clinton Marks, Terra Keller and Justin Marks; and nine great-grandchildren, Cameron, Anabele, Tanner, Kylee, Kolton, Kayden, Kelsie, Sienna and Brandon.
He was preceded in death by his father, Leslie Marks, and mother, Lorena (Carlson) Marks, of Salem, S.D.; and brother, Donald Marks of Tulsa, Okla.
Darrell was the oldest of four and was born Oct. 26, 1924, in Salem, S.D., to Leslie and Lorena Marks. He grew up on a farm in Salem, and was drafted into Army Basic Training in May 1945 and honorably discharged in November 1946 after serving 12 months as a military policeman during World War 11.
After returning from the Army he worked for a dairy and later as a carpenter. Darrell married Myra Flint from Mitchell, S.D., on May 9, 1947. After the birth of their first child, Larry then moved to Iowa in the fall of 1948 to work in construction for his brother-in-law in Shellsburg, Iowa. He continued his passion for building and completed many projects large and small for family and friends.
Darrell and Myra retired part-time to Mesa, Ariz., as snow birds and continued traveling in their motor home during the summer months to family and friends all over the U.S. Together they saw many places and lots of country, visiting family and friends and continuing Darrell's love of building and repairing everywhere he went.
Family was important to Darrell and he spent many days helping family with anything they needed. He had to have a hammer in his hand and traveled with his tools and his tool belt everywhere he went. He leaves a legacy of shops, sheds, decks, guest houses, basements, electrical, windows, skylights, cedar chests, furniture and anything you could use in or around your home to make life easier.
He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and everyone who knew him.
Wishing you peace and joy as he continues on his journey.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Darrell L. Marks to Hospice of the Valley, 2020 E. West Side Ct., Gilbert AZ 85297.
