One dead in explosion at Hawkeye Drive apartment complex

The University of Iowa Police Department (UIPD) is reporting that one person has died after an explosion was reported at the Hawkeye Drive apartment complex Friday evening.
According to a UIPD news release, law enforcement officers from the university and the Iowa City Fire Department responded to a call from neighbors about the explosion at Hawkeye Drive at approximately 4:30 p.m.
UIPD is reporting a single fatality in the incident, but the identity of the victim is not being released at this time. The State Fire Marshall's office has an investigator on the scene, according to the release.
Most residents have returned to their apartments, although those living in apartments adjacent to the explosion are expected to be allowed to return later this evening, according to the release.
Located about three miles west of the central campus of the University of Iowa, Hawkeye Drive apartments are owned by the university with the purpose of providing housing to students, students with families and staff.
