UPDATE: A University of Iowa student faces multiple charges, including harassment, burglary, and assault, as a result of two separate incidents over the weekend.
Matthew J. Martin, 19, of 312 E. Burlington Street, No. 10 was arrested around 6 a.m. on Friday morning after he allegedly broke into The Den at 123 E. Washington Street in Iowa City. Police say Martin was charged with third-degree burglary after he stole $1,100 in tobacco products from the store.
After he was apprehended, Martin allegedly bit an officer on the forearm, drawing blood. Police say Martin then began to kick officers and used racial slurs while officers tried to place him inside a car. Martin was charged with assault to a peace officer causing injury, according to a police report.
In a separate incident that began on Thursday morning, Martin was charged in connection to first-degree harassment after allegedly forcing his way into a victim's home and threatening the victim with violence. On Friday morning, police say Martin sent the victim several text messages threatening the victim with violence if he reported Martin to the police.
Martin is currently being held in the Johnson County Jail on a $30,000 bond.
