Larson, Dorothy J.
Dorothy J. Larson, 90, a resident of Silver Pines Retirement Community, died there Monday, July 5, 2010, from Alzheimer's disease. Graveside services will be held at a later date at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include a son, Paul (Sally) of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Robert Larson of North English, Ryan (Jenny) Larson and Becky Heldt, all of Cedar Rapids; great-grandchildren, Gracie Larson, Jeremy Heldt and Christy Heldt, all of Cedar Rapids, and Amy Hill of Mason City; and one great-great-granddaughter, Abbie Heldt – Kent.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, Thomas; brother, Charles Jones; and a grandson, Chad.
Dorothy was born Aug. 25, 1919, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Robert and Blanche Day Jones. She married Richard R. Larson on May 7, 1942, in Chicago. He died in 1987. She was a member of New Encounters, Circle of Rubies, Red Hat Ladies and Altruss. She ushered at Paramount, did lots of volunteer work and was active in church work. She loved to travel to Europe and all over the USA. She graduated with honors from Franklin High School Class of 1937. She was a graduated of the Michael Reese School of Nursing in Chicago. She was the occupational health nurse at Rockwell Collins for 32 years, retiring in 1982 as head of the nursing department. She enjoyed doing needlework, walking, swimming, reading and spending time with her grandchildren.
Dorothy's family wishes special thanks to the nurses and staff at Emeritus of Silver Pines for the excellent care of their mother and grandmother in her final days, also to Iowa Hospice nurses who helped, especially to Teresa.
Memorial contributions may be made to Knox Presbyterian Church.
