Donn was born at home on Dec. 28, 1922, in Tama, Iowa, to parents E.C. and Grace (Kentner) Carnal, who preceded him in death. After graduating from Tama High School in 1940, he attended Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa, for two years until enlisting in the U.S. Navy on Oct. 21, 1942. Arlette and Donn moved to Fairfield, where Donn graduated from Parsons College in 1948. He then taught school in Le Roy, Iowa, for three years, where his son, Richard, was born. They then moved to Estherville, Iowa, where they lived for five years before moving to Cedar Rapids, where he spent 23 years with Rockwell Collins and eight years with DCASMA.
Donn was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Arlette; and his brother, Richard.
He is survived by his son, Richard; three grandchildren, Autumn, Casey and Oakley; and eight great-grandchildren, Oliver, Maizey, Casper, Zalia, Riley, Rowan, Cabrini and Henry.
Donn was a Mason and Shriner, and spent 32 years as a member of El Kahir Shrine Drum and Bugle Corps. He also was a lifetime member of Legion Post 298. He belonged to the Indian Creek Country Club, St. Paul's United Methodist Church and the National Contract Managers Association.
