LILLIAN H. SCHUETZLE
Fairfax
Lillian H. Schuetzle, 80, of Fairfax, died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2017, at the Solon Care Center. Services: 10 a.m. Friday, Teahen Funeral Home. Burial: Fairfax Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Teahen Funeral Home.
Lillian is survived by two sons, Dwight Schuetzle of Fairfax and Guy Schuetzle of Cedar Rapids; a daughter, Cindy (Dave) McDowell of Iowa City; and three grandchildren, Cailey (Jerome) Nachazel of Marion and Kyle and Connor McDowell, both of Iowa City.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Burnell.
Lillian Hermina was born on Oct. 2, 1936, the daughter of Frank and Libbie Urbanek Bares. Her first name came from actress Lillian Gish and her middle name, Hermina, from her great-grandmother on her father's side, who Lillian, by a matter of great coincidence, ended up resembling.
Lillian was born and raised in Cedar Rapids, where, as a young girl, she often was dressed as a twin to her sister, June. In later years, she would show rabbits at various fairs with her brother, Larry. Raising rabbits for show was a special interest of her father's, and all of her siblings had their own pet rabbits at one time or another. In high school, Lillian enjoyed her job at Dairy Queen, where she worked for several years. As a graduate of Wilson High School class of 1955, she assisted for many years on her class reunion committee.
Lillian married Burnell Dale Schuetzle in March 1959, and after living in Cedar Rapids for eight years, they purchased a small acreage at the south edge of Fairfax in 1967. In later years, they became loyal fans of the local Fairfax baseball team, regularly watching both home and away games while raising their family. Over the years, Lillian was an active member of the Fairfax Legion Women's Auxiliary, helping out with countless events in Fairfax. Lillian had a passion for bowling, which she did for many years. The camaraderie of the teams she played on in her women's bowling league was very special in her life.
After 37 years at Schneider Electric, she retired in January 2003 and became very involved in the raising of her grandsons.
Special thanks go to the staff at the Solon Care Center for their kindness and care during her final days.
Memorials may be directed to the American Legion Auxiliary or the Iowa Department for the Blind.
