Edward D. "Ed" King, 69, of Iowa City, passed away on Aug. 31, 2018, at Mercy Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Friends of the Animal Center

Ed was born in 1948 in Kansas City, Kan., the son of Everett M. and Lillian E. (Mercer) King. He graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1966 and went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1971 and a Master of Public Administration degree in 1981 from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Ed also graduated from the Regional Police Academy in Kansas City. Early in his career, he worked for Kansas City as an airport police officer, a field office manager and an insurance administrator. In 1985, he joined the University of Missouri System, where he worked as director of risk and insurance management. He worked for the Environmental Health and Safety Department of the University of Missouri-Columbia from 1992 until he retired in 2006 and moved to Iowa City with his wife, Jeri Ripley King. While in Columbia, Ed was an active member of the Central Missouri Chapter of the Train Collectors Association, where he made many good and lasting friends. In retirement, Ed continued to enjoy model railroading, being outside, keeping up with friends and family, and pampering his wife almost as much as their wonderful feline companions.
Ed met Jeri shortly after joining the University of Missouri. He and Jeri were both new to the University of Missouri System when Jeri was assigned to get Ed a birthday card. Serendipitously, Jeri selected a card featuring a cat and a car, two of Ed's favorite things in life. The rest is Hallmark history. Married in 1990, each brought a cat to their blended family and were relieved when the two got along. Ed and Jeri got along well, too, celebrating their 28th wedding anniversary in June.
Edward is survived by his wife, Jeri; his beloved brother, Everett Clinton King and wife Connie of Salt Lake City, Utah, and their son, Clinton King; two brothers-in-law, Joseph Ripley and his wife Aekyung of Vienna, Va., and Jonathan Ripley and his wife Margaret of Broken Arrow, Okla.; nephews, Michael and Alexander Ripley; and nieces, Kathryn, Kristina and Jennifer Ripley. Edward was preceded in death by his parents.
He will be sorely missed by his family, friends and neighbors.
