It’s time to end school bullying

To the editor:
I grew up in Marion and went through elementary, junior high school and high school being horribly bullied. There were no laws that protected people from being bullied.
I was called stupid, lazy, crazy, a ‘retard'. My peers called me names that I can't even tell you. They were obscene. I can't do anything about it or get any restitution for the years I suffered. I just wanted to be left alone, my posture was terrible, trying to keep out of everyone's way. I was tripped, hit over the head with books and clipboards. I still have a lump on my of my head from a kid in 6th grade who hit me over the head with a clipboard and heavy books. Shame on all of them.
I found out when I was 21 and a sophomore at Iowa State University, I have a learning disability. I graduated from Iowa State in 1982 with a B.A. in leisure studies. It is hard to do math and I cannot remember what I read. I have to reread and reread and reread something to get it in my head. That doesn't mean I'm stupid, it means I learn differently. Congratulations on Gov. Terry Branstad signing the executive order on school bullying into effect. That's one thing he did right.
