Roll, Eileen F. Possehl
Eileen F. Possehl Roll, 97, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012, at Rock Ridge Residential Care Center in Shellsburg. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton, with the Rev. Stephen K. Preus and the Rev. Mark Leckband officiating. Interment will be in Urbana Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 East Sixth St., Vinton.
A memorial fund has been established.
Eileen was born Nov. 24, 1914, to George and Mahala Revel Possehl in rural Watkins. She graduated from Urbana High School and attended Hamilton Business College. Eileen was united in marriage to Arden Dale Roll on Sept. 21, 1935, on the farm of Eileen's parents near Urbana. She worked as an assistant cashier at the Urbana Savings Bank for 14 years and later as a payroll clerk for 14 years at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton.
In her leisure Eileen enjoyed dancing, traveling, caring for her lawn, genealogy, playing Canasta and 500 with her card clubs, spending time with her grandchildren and sharing family stories.
Eileen was a longtime volunteer for the American Cancer Society, a member of the Benton County Cancer Society and a 27-year breast cancer survivor.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton, where she taught Sunday school and Bible school. She served as vice president of the Urbana Cemetery Association, treasurer of Urbana Consolidated Schools for 26 years and as a 4-H leader.
Left to celebrate Eileen's life are her daughters, Patricia Hoff Bahr of Shellsburg and Nancy Wendel of Oelwein; her grandchildren, William (Barb) Hoff of Cedar Rapids, Lora (David) Spencer of Shellsburg, Steven (Victoria) Hoff of Humboldt, Neb., Robert Hoff of Vinton, Michael (Sudabah) Hoff of Medford, Ore., Daniel Hoff of Beeman, Randy (Kimberly) Hoff of Cedar Rapids, Tammy Swenka of Ottumwa, Kent Wendel of New London, Martin (Lavonne) Wendel of Oelwein, Elwood (Tina) Wendel of Sumner, Nedra (Josh) Blietz of West Union, George (Vickie) Wendel of Oelwein, Thomas (Sharon) Brehm of Vinton, Scott Brehm of Sayor, Okla., and Christin (Marcus) Kampfe of Jacksonville Beach, Fla.; her 41 great-grandchildren and 24 great-great-grandchildren.
In death Eileen has rejoined her parents; husband, Arden; daughter, Mary Palas; sister, Julia Bruce; brother-in-law, Francis Bruce; and sister-in-law, Marie Koutny.
