Police have arrested a Cedar Rapids man in connection with an assault last month that left another man with bleeding in his brain.
Jamiel J. Slaman, 23, of 2046 Linn Blvd. SE, has been charged with willful injury after his arrest on a warrant Thursday evening. He is accused of assaulting Jered Van Engen, 30, of Marion, shortly after midnight on June 10, police said.
According to a police report, witnesses said Van Engen was sitting on a curb near the corner of 12th Avenue and Third Street SE when a person bumped up against him. Van Engen apologized, but the person punched him in the head and knocked him unconscious. A man then got on top of Van Engen and hit him several more times and then ran away, police said.
Witnesses reported seeing two white men running south on Third Street SE.
Van Engen was taken by ambulance to St. Luke's Hospital. Doctors discovered bleeding in his brain, and he also required stitches to his chin, police said.
Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said Slaman was identified as one of the assailants through an investigation. He was arrested around 9:15 p.m. Thursday at 2121 Arthur Collins Parkway SW and transported to the Linn County Jail. His bond was set at $10,000.
An investigation was continuing, Hamblin said.
