CEDAR RAPIDS - Construction has begun on a 7,300-square-foot expansion at a southwest Cedar Rapids business.
Master Packing and Rubber Co., 6430 Fourth St. SW, will be adding four employees when the $700,000 expansion is completed. In addition to the building expansion, 700 square feet of new office space will be created in the existing plant.
Master Packing, founded in 1982, manufactures seals and gaskets for a variety of industries, including food processing, pharmaceuticals, refineries, chemical plants and pump and valve manufacturers.
Robb and Rick Ridgway, principal owners of the business, said the expansion was driven by increasing sales and the development of specialty products for specific applications.
"As a result of this expansion, Master Packing and Rubber will expand its capacities and capabilities to manufacture new lines of gaskets and seals for a variety of new applications," Robb Ridgway said.
The Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance assisted Master Packing by evaluating financial assistance options, including an industrial property tax exemption.
Dee Baird, president and chief executive officer of the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance, said supporting projects involving small, locally owned businesses is critical for growth in the Corridor.
“When an established company like Master Packing and Rubber is willing to invest in the community, it not only shows a commitment to the region but provides an opportunity for additional jobs,” Baird said.
