Evelyn Seedorf
EVELYN KATHRYN DICKINSON
MAYS SEEDORF
Cedar Rapids
Evelyn Kathryn Dickinson Mays Seedorf, 99, passed quietly on Monday, Aug. 6, 2018, at North Shore Health and Rehab Facility in Loveland, Colo.
Evelyn was born Dec. 11, 1918, in Tipton, Iowa, and raised on a farm near Springdale, Iowa. Being a farm girl, she maintained a steadfast kindness to all animals, especially cats and squirrels.
While living in Cedar Rapids, Evelyn worked at Collins Radio for many years, assembling electronic devices for helicopters. While there, she designed a template which increased the assembly line's efficiency. This inventiveness and innate creativity blossomed in diverse interests. She was an avid reader of nonfiction and a longtime fan of the "Everybody Loves Raymond" TV show. She was a ceramic sculptor, a graphic artist, an expert gardener, a diabolic prankster and a delightful poet.
During her long life of 99 years, Evelyn persevered through many hardships. When her home in Cedar Rapids was flooded in 2008, she moved to Colorado to be near family.
Evelyn always found ways to display her witty sense of humor. A few years ago, when it was revealed to her that she was a direct descendant of Britain's Queen Elizabeth I, Evelyn quipped, "Well, I guess I need a bigger throne."
To share a small sample of Evelyn's bountiful legacy, here is one of her poems:
Reaching in a Hen's Nest
You beast upon that egg so fine,
Had better learn what's thine is mine.
If you peck once more upon my skins,
You'll find yourself without withins.
Evelyn is survived by her eldest daughter, Evanette Mays Luton; her eldest son, Everett Mays Jr.; her youngest son, Howard Seedorf; and her devoted youngest daughter, Kathy Seedorf Korth. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her twin sister, Ethel Jean Dickinson Wood, on Sept. 20, 2015.
If you wish to offer condolences or remembrances, please write Everett Mays at 418 W. Third St., Loveland, CO 80537; or email emaysjr@comcast.net.
