Mrs. Charlotte Anna Hessenius, 93, who lived most of her life in Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2018, at her residence in ABCM Rehabilitation in Independence. She was in the later stages of dementia.
She is survived by her son, Charles, and his wife, Elizabeth, and two granddaughters, Kathryn (18) and Allison (15), of Aldie, Va.
Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Raymond, Charles, Edward and Robert; three sisters, Kathryn, Janet and Eleanor; and her husband, W.J. "Slim" Hessenius.
Charlotte was born in Jesup on Oct. 29, 1924, to William and Anna Kimm. The youngest of eight children, she was nicknamed Babe by her siblings. She married Slim on Nov. 17, 1946, in Atkins. In the 1950s, they lived in San Francisco for a while before returning to Iowa. They were approaching 59 years of marriage when Slim died of cancer in 2005. Charlotte was a homemaker who was a loving, devoted and supportive wife and mother.
Services will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2018, at 10 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids. Visitation will start at 9 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery.
