UPDATE: The man who was run over by a car in a Wal-Mart parking lot Tuesday is still alive, police said this morning.
Terrance Adams, 23, of Chicago, is in serious condition at St. Luke's Hospital, police said. He was hit just after 2 p.m. as he walked away from Wal-Mart, 2645 Blairs Ferry Rd. NE.
Rescue crews arrived to find Adams pinned under the car in front of the store's west entrance. He had a faint pulse at that time, according to police scanner traffic.
The car's driver, Dorothy Simanek, 85, of Walker, was headed east, then turned left into one of the lot's rows and struck Adams, police said. Investigators reviewed surveillance video to try to determine what happened.
Charges will not be filed against Simanek, Hamblin said. Because the accident happened on private property, she said the only applicable charges would be drunken or reckless driving or driving on a suspended license. Investigators eliminated all those possibilities.
Police are likely to ask the Iowa Department of Transportation to re-evaluate Simanek for a driver's license, based on the seriousness of the crash, Hamblin said.
