Thomas Robert Tomkins, 69, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2016, at his home from a sudden illness. Services: 2 p.m. Friday at St. Patrick Catholic Church by the Rev. Ivan Nienhaus. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Teahen Funeral Home and after 1 p.m. Friday at the church.
Thomas is survived by
his wife, Linda; daughter, Kimberly (Gregory) Fitzpatrick of Marion; son, Robert (Connie) of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Bradley, Mitchell, Dakota and Makenzie; sister, Mary (David) Jordan of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and two brothers, Richard (Shirley) Tomkins of Ely and William Tomkins of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Thomas Robert was born Dec. 2, 1946, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Merle and Ruth Cook Tomkins. He married Linda Ann Young on Feb. 24, 1968, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City. He worked as a mechanical technician for 44 years at National Oats, which was later bought out by Ralston Foods. Thomas was the union president of AFLCIO Grain Millers for 17 years.
Thomas enjoyed spending time outdoors, fishing, camping and trips to Wyoming with friends. He will be greatly missed for his storytelling, jokes and laughter that he enjoyed sharing with his grandchildren.
