Tree Hugger knitters needed in Iowa City

I've seen a few examples of this in Cedar Rapids and now Iowa City is launching a large-scale project for its downtown trees. See more from the Iowa City Downtown District:

IOWA CITY - The Iowa City Downtown District is calling all local knitters to volunteer for the new Tree Huggers Project.

The ICDD has identified, mapped and measured over 90 trees for this community venture. Knitters are needed to knit multicolored “sweaters” for each of the trees. Home Ec Workshop has agreed to be the distribution center for the project and will assign trees and distribute instructions and yarn.

There is no cost to become a Tree Hugger knitter. Tree Huggers is financed in part by Total Tree Care of Iowa City. Tree Huggers will enhance the vibrancy and vitality of Downtown Iowa City and the Northside Marketplace by bringing together knitters of all ages in a fun community-wide

undertaking.

Several “knit-a-thons” are being planned in the upcoming weeks at various

locations such as the Iowa City Public Library, RSVP and Home Ec Workshop.

“We hope to have the Tree Huggers completed and installed by the first week in

November,” Joni Schrup, Co-Chair of the ICDD Special Events Committee, said.

The Iowa City Downtown District is a non-profit organization funded through

contributions from property taxes assessed to properties in Downtown Iowa City and the

Northside Marketplace and financial support from The University of Iowa. The

organization provides leadership and undertakes programs to promote and sustain

Downtown Iowa City as a unique and economically viable business, entertainment,

social and cultural center.
