Duane P. St. John passed away Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016, after his fight with prostate cancer.
Duane was born Dec. 11, 1946, in Waterloo, Iowa. Duane and Deb (Steege) were married Oct. 19, 1968.
Duane is survived by his wife, Deb; and their three children and families, Stacie (Michael, Victoria and Alexis, Ontario, Canada), Patrick (Claire and Carly, Des Moines) and Cara (Aurora, Colo.). He is also survived by his brothers, Donald (Ginger), Plymouth, Minn., Richard (Jean), Sonora, Calif., Steven (Jan), Rockville, Md.; and a sister, Barbara, Rockton, Ill.
Duane is also survived by his mother-in-law, Wilma Steege; numerous nieces; nephews, Gaige Wessling, Drake Brewster and Jaxon Thompson; and other relatives.
Duane was preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law, a brother-in-law and nephew.
Duane was a certified public accountant and worked in Cedar Rapids since 1976. Duane enjoyed working with and assisting his many clients. Duane was a member of the AICPA and ISCPA (life member) and a past board member of the ISCPA. Duane was active in the Cedar Rapids community including past president of the Marion-East Cedar Rapids Rotary Club, past president of the Linn-Mar School Foundation, board member of the Marion YMCA and many years serving on various boards of his church, First Congregational United Church of Christ. Duane also served in the U.S. Army from 1968-1970.
Duane loved athletics, both as a participant and as a spectator. He was a diehard Hawkeye fan (making it to every Big 10 football stadium, except Rutgers). He enjoyed the opportunity to "coach" his children in their sporting endeavors and other youth sports. Duane enjoyed most following his children and grandchildren in their sporting, music and other activities. Duane considered himself fortunate to be recognized as a first team all metro and first team all conference his senior year of basketball at East Waterloo and to participate in the 1965 state basketball tournament. He was a member of the basketball teams at both Iowa Wesleyan College and UNI.
A visitation will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, at First Congregational Church, 361 17th St. SE, Cedar Rapids, with the funeral to follow at 3 p.m.
