Debra A. Downes, 58, of rural Oxford, died Monday, Feb. 24, 2014, at her home after a lengthy illness. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 28, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Cosgrove. The Rev. Edmond Dunn will officiate. Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church. A parish wake service will begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery in Cosgrove.
The family kindly requests that instead of flowers and plants, memorials be directed to The Debra Downes Memorial Fund.
Deb was born Jan. 7, 1956, in Iowa City, the daughter of Earle "Bud" and Kathryn (Winter) Scheetz. Growing up in Oxford, Deb graduated from Clear Creek High School in 1974. In junior high, she met and then later married Steve Downes on April 26, 1975, at St. Mary's Church in Oxford.
She is survived by her husband, Steve; her children, Camie (Keith) Marshek of Iowa City, Brian (Lindsey) Downes of Iowa City, Stephanie (Brian) Rohret of Portland, Ore., and Andrew (Kristen) Downes of Tiffin; her grandchildren, Kailee, Kelly, Madeline and Morgan; her beloved dog, Lucy; her siblings, Gary (Donna) Scheetz of Oxford, Mike Scheetz of Oxford, Bob (Londa Suter) Scheetz of Coralville and Mary Lenz of Iowa City; and many nieces and nephews.
Her parents and two infant brothers, Patrick and Thomas died earlier.
