Thompson, Lenore Kathryn Schminke
Lenore Kathryn Schminke Thompson, 82, died Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, at the Keystone Nursing Care Center following an extended illness. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Van Horne with the Rev. David Lingard officiating. Interment will be held at Salem Cemetery in Van Horne. Friends may call at St. Andrew Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday.
Memorials may be directed to St. Andrew Lutheran Church Stained Glass Restoration Project.
Lenore was born July 11, 1930, to Walter and Ilma (Werning) Schminke on the family farm near Newhall. She was baptized July 27, 1930 and confirmed April 7, 1944 at St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall. She attended country parochial school and graduated from Van Horne High School in 1948.
She was married to Clifford Thompson on Aug. 7, 1949, and enjoyed 63 years of marriage. They lived on the family farm near Van Horne where she shared the many responsibilities of life on the farm and raising five children. She was an active member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church and the Missionary Society.
Her greatest joy was spending time with her family. She loved gardening and tending to her many plants and flower beds which she continually received compliments from neighbors and those passing by. She enjoyed the challenge of growing new types of flowers. She was a member of the Van Horne Garden Club for many years and received several awards for her artistic ability in flower arranging.
She is survived by her husband, Cliff of Keystone; her children, Greg (Suzy) Thompson of Pilot Point, Texas, Diane (Dave) Kosbau of Brookings, S.D., Deb (Mike) Marinelli of Cato, N.Y., Gary (Julie) Thompson of Van Horne and Cara (Eric) Gregory of Ankeny; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; her sisters, Lois (Grant) Wessling of Atkins, Elaine Kromminga of Keystone and Ruth (Darwin) Oehlerich of Keystone; and her sister-in-law, Donna Schminke of Strawberry Point.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Wilfred, Daryl, Vernon and Marlin Schminke.
