Smith, Thomas 'Tom'
Thomas “Tom” Smith, 67, of Marion, died Tuesday, August 2, 2011, at his home, following a long illness. Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, August 6, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Marion. The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion, where a parish vigil will begin at 7 p.m. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Military honors provided by American Legion Post No. 298, Marion, Iowa.
Tom was born Dec. 25, 1943, the son of Ferd and Rowena (Lamphier) Smith in Oelwein, Iowa. He graduated from Northwest Institute of Medical Technology. Tom worked at Story City Memorial Hospital, Peoples Memorial Hospital of Independence, and Cargill Corn Starch & Syrup of Cedar Rapids, retiring in 2006. Tom proudly served in the United States Air Force in San Antonio, Texa, s during the Vietnam War. He was united in marriage to Mary Ann Brown on April 12, 1969, and together they had two daughters, Tonja and Leslie.
Tom was president of the Independence Jaycees during the 1970s and rider educator and chapter director of the Goldwing Road Riders Motorcycle Club - Chapter F of Cedar Rapids.
Tom is survived by his wife, Mary of Marion; two daughters, Tonja Fortney of North Liberty, and Leslie (David) Runde of Marion; grandchildren, Anthony and Jessica of North Liberty, and Samantha and Dalton of Marion; extended family, Wade, Shauna, Zachary and Sarah Chevalier of Marion and Robert, Colleen, Justin, and Kristin Daniel of Marion; three brothers, James (Martha) Smith of Fort Wayne, Ind., Carl Smith and Donald Smith of Oelwein; three sisters, Mardelle Clendenen of Oelwein, Lola Jean Smith of Albuquerque, N.M., and Shirley (Bob) Nelson of Apple Valley, Minn.; and brother-in-law, James (Bonnie) Brown of Hiawatha.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Ferd and Rowena Smith; brother, Robert Smith; and sisters, Doris Lawrence and Carol Lohrer of Oelwein.
