Jon Phillip Kohl passed away Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016, at St. Luke's Hospital due to complications from a stroke. He was 82 years old.
Jon was born in 1933 to Karl Walker Kohl and Rachel Mae Kohl (Rick) in Cedar Rapids. He graduated from Franklin High School and went on to Coe College with an athletic scholarship. He played football in college and was inducted into Coe's Hall of Fame in 1998. After earning his degree, he went on to a long career as a teacher. He married Jo Ann Rossbach in 1960. He continued to teach in the Cedar Rapids and Linn-Mar districts until he retired.
Jon was a man of many passions and many skills. He loved teaching and coaching and influenced many lives in his career. His family was always dear to him, and he cherished every moment spent with them. Also, Jon was a craftsman; he machined parts for various antique firearms.
Jon is survived by his loving wife; his children, Tod Kohl (Wendy), Beth Ann Kohl, (Thomas Ochs) and Jennifer Goldsberry; his siblings, Patricia White, Susan Blood, Mary Cowles, David Kohl, Bruce Kohl and Peter Kohl; as well as his many grandchildren, great- grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as siblings, Geraldyne Kreicoch, Carol Fish, Constance Alcott, William Kohl and Karl Joseph Kohl.
Services will at Our Saviors Lutheran Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27. Pastor Phil Jorgensen will officiate. The family invites friends to gather at the church to share memories and celebrate Jon's life immediately after the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Jon's name to St. Luke's hospice program.
