Welcome to the top, Warriors. For now, anyway.
Cedar Rapids Washington rose to the No. 1 slot in Class 4A in the Gazette/KCRG/KGYM high school football rankings, released Monday afternoon.
The Warriors (6-0) supplanted last week's top team, Bettendorf (6-0), after the Bulldogs slipped past Iowa City West, 28-27, in overtime Friday. Washington, meanwhile, destroyed Ottumwa, 40-2. For what it's worth, the Warriors handled Iowa City West, 28-0, in Week 3.
Washington, which received six of seven first-place votes and outpointed Bettendorf by a 69-64 margin, is at Cedar Rapids Prairie this week.
West Des Moines Dowling, West Des Moines Valley and Waukee, all of which are 5-1, are Nos. 3, 4 and 5.
The other No. 1 teams remain the same - Pella in Class 3A. Clear Lake in 2A, Fort Dodge St. Edmond in 1A, Maquoketa Valley in Class A and Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton in 8-Man. All are 6-0.
Cedar Rapids Xavier (4-2) fell four spots to No. 6 in 3A after suffering a 7-6 upset loss to Western Dubuque.
The closest race is in 1A, where St. Edmond, Iowa City Regina and South Winneshiek are within a six-point margin. St. Edmond received four first-place votes, Regina three.
