A trio of former players from the Metro and Iowa City have made commitments to play college baseball at the Division I level.
Former Iowa City High shortstop Sam Mrstik will sign to play for Dallas Baptist University in Texas. His roommate at Johnston County Community College in Kansas, former Linn-Mar prep Justin Wyant, has committed to play for Chicago State University.
Another JCCC player, Austin Stroschein, has committed to play for Creighton. He also is a Linn-Mar graduate.
Mrstik hit .304 last season as a freshman for Johnson County, which qualified for the NJCAA Division I World Series. Wyant was 8-2 with a 3.25 earned run average.
They are sophomores. Stroschein is a freshman who transferred from Des Moines Area Community College.
Iowa City High's Grant Simpson heads back to first base as Justin Wyant of Linn-Mar waits for the throw from the pitcher during the first game of a doubleheader at Mercer Park in Iowa City on Friday, June 29, 2012. (Cliff Jette/The Gazette-KCRG TV9)
