Low wages hurt families, economy

To the editor:
As a nurse, I've seen firsthand the impact low wages have had on the health of Iowans. With the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, we've made progress toward addressing disparities in health care. But we haven't addressed the disparities caused by low wages being paid to workers in our community.
I used to believe that workers in the fast food industry were high school students working to make 'fun money.” The shocking truth is that the average age of employees in the fast food industry is now over 29 years and most have families. With the current minimum wage of $7.25/hour, it's no wonder these workers struggle to meet their own basic needs, let alone try to provide for a family.
When corporations make the deliberate choice to put profits over people, taxpayers are left holding the bill by subsidizing corporations in our communities. When employers don't pay enough, the workers end up being forced to rely on public assistance and subsidies that put pressure on taxpayers.
That's not to mention the impact that low pay has on our economy. When people make more money they spend more money.
The 'Fight for $15 and a Union” movement has reinvigorated millions of people around the globe by the simple notion that all work should be respected and that if you work hard and follow the rules you should be able to provide for yourself and your family.
It's time, Johnson County needs a raise!
