Election proposals restrictive, unneeded

I see the denizens of the Golden Dome of Wisdom are at it again, this time proposing to restrict voting rights.

Consider the effect of some of the provisions:

Some polls currently close at 8 p.m., some at 9 p.m. The proposal is to standardize to 8 p.m., the lowest common and restrictive denominator.

The proposal is to forbid state buildings from serving as satellite voting locations, because not every town has a state building. This restricts access for some and doesn't improve access for anyone.

Require absentee ballots to be received by Election Day, not sent before Election Day. If county employees fail to check the mailbox the day before the election, too bad, voter.

College students would have to sign an oath of fealty to the geographic state of Iowa in order to vote. Will retirees thinking of moving to the south have to do the same?

None of these sound like homegrown Iowa proposals, nor are they needed.

I am convinced that all Republican candidates nationwide are required to pledge an oath of loyalty to the party's voter restriction position in order to use the (R) after their name. If your representative is a Republican, why don't you ask him or her about it?
