No. 19 Nebraska pushes past Hawkeyes

Jan. 8, 2012 5:15 pm
IOWA CITY -- The Iowa Hawkeyes overcame a frosty 3-point display Thursday against Illinois.
Not Sunday. Not against Nebraska.
Iowa made just 2 of 16 shots from behind the arc and dropped a 77-72 Big Ten women's basketball decision to the 19th-ranked Huskers in front of a Girl Scout Day crowd of 7,269 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
"I thought we played decently, but (Nebraska's Jordan) Hooper and (Lindsey) Moore were too much," said Iowa Coach Lisa Bluder. "They made some big shots when the game was on the line.
"And 2 of 16 ... that's not very good."
The Hawkeyes (10-7 overall, 2-2 Big Ten) made just 4 of 30 long-range shots in their two-game home set this week. They survived 2 of 14 against Illinois.
But the chilliness continued into Sunday, and it was too much.
"We've got to come together as a team," said junior center Morgan Johnson, who posted her second straight double-double before halftime and finished with 21 points and 12 rebounds. "We are a good team."
Right now, though, Nebraska is better. The Huskers (14-1, 3-0) trailed by eight points early in the second half, but rallied to join Purdue and Michigan State stop the Big Ten standings.
"I looked at the schedule and I thought we could easily be 0-3 at this point," said Nebraska Coach Connie Yori, whose team is making its Big Ten debut this season. "We made a lot of plays down the stretch, and we have a good point guard."
That would be Moore, who posted 22 points, nine assists and seven rebounds. She created for herself. And for others.
"We played with a lot of toughness down the stretch," Moore said. "We're a tough team when we're making shots."
Iowa's Jaime Printy led all scorers with 27 points. Her two free throws gave Iowa a 46-38 advantage with 14:43 to go. But Nebraska outscored the Hawkeyes, 39-26, the rest of the way.
Moore's 3-pointer put the Huskers in front, 61-60, with 5:58 left. After Samantha Logic made two free throws to put Iowa back in front, Nebraska scored the next nine points to swing the pendulum for good.
Hooper added 17 points, Emily Cady 14 for the winners.
The trio of Printy, Johnson and Kamille Wahlin (12 points) combined for all but 12 of Iowa's points.
It was determined on Saturday that Logic, who suffered a sprained ankle against Illinois, would play. She registered four points in 26 minutes.
"She was obviously a little slow out there," Bluder said. "She'll be ready to go by next week."
The Hawkeyes are off until next Sunday, when they play at Purdue.
