Robert D. Burns, 89, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, Feb. 23, 2015, at Cottage Grove Place, Cedar Rapids. Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 27, at Sharon United Methodist Church, Cedar Rapids, conducted by the Rev. Kevin Moore. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Helen Burns of Cedar Rapids; sons, Steven (Valleri) of Cedar Rapids, Robert (Jeri) of Urbana and Rex (Michelle) of Gilbert, Ariz.; grandchildren, Shane, Jason, Jasmine, T.J., Daniel, Jacob, Ashley, Allie and Sarah; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Harry, Isabelle, Margaret, Rex Roy II, Stona and Virginia.
Bob was born on Aug. 14, 1925, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Rex and Anna (Morgan) Burns. He graduated from Ottumwa High School. He was served in the United States Navy during World War II and in the Pacific Theater. On April 7, 1947, he married Helen Brooks in Kansas City, Kan. Bob worked for Rockwell Collins for 30 years before retiring in 1989. He was a member of the Sharon United Methodist Church and the Cedar Rapids VFW Post No. 788. Following retirement, Bob and Helen traveled extensively throughout the world.
