Donald Melichar, 73, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Burial will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Donald is survived by his wife of 46 years, Sharlene Melichar of Cedar Rapids; two sons, Richard Oltrogge of Sarah, Miss., and Jay (Robin) Melichar of Cedar Rapids; a brother, Edward (Janet) Melichar of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Janice (Walter) Ashbacker of Solon; granddaughter, Bayli Oltrogge; and many loving nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Joseph Melichar and Richard Melichar.
Donald Melichar was born Nov. 10, 1940, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Joseph and Blanche (Terpkosh) Melichar. He graduated from Washington High School in Cedar Rapids. Upon graduation, he attended Iowa State Teachers College. Donald married Sharlene Westendorf on Aug. 19, 1967, in Rock Island, Ill. He worked for Peoples Bank/Norwest Bank from 1959 until retiring in 1993, after 33 years of service. After retiring, he worked as a consultant for Heartland Investment Associates.
Donald was very active in the Cedar Rapids community. He was a member of the following organizations: Cedar Rapids West Rotary Club, where Donald served as president from 1981 to 1982; District 5970 Governor Rotary from 2002 to 2003; American Legion Member since 1984; an active member of Olivet Presbyterian Church; Cedar Rapids Bowling Association since 1960; and United Way of Eastern Iowa, where Donald was a past board member and volunteer. Donald enjoyed slow pitch softball, golf and performing his balancing tricks, one in which he could balance a push mower on his chin. Donald's memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved him. He will be greatly missed.
Memorials may be directed to the family which will be donated to the Cedar Rapids West Rotary Club in Donald's honor.
