Chris A. Canas, 86, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2018, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa. Family will greet family and friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24, 2018, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. A funeral service will be held at
11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, 2018, at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, Cedar Rapids. Burial will follow at the Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Chris was born Nov. 8, 1931, in Gargalianoi, Messinias, in Greece, the son of Apostolos and Konstantina (Tzoumis) Kanakopoulos. He married Mary Gianimbas on June 5, 1960, in Greece. In 1968 Chris moved to Chicago, Ill., then to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He worked at J.D. Steakhouse from 1970 to 1976. The family moved to Newton, Iowa, before moving back to Cedar Rapids in 1984. Chris was a member of St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church. He enjoyed being with family and friends and working hard for his family, who always came first.
Chris is survived by his wife, Mary of Cedar Rapids; daughter, Tina Canas of Sarasota, Fla.; sons, Paul (Maria) Canas of Cedar Rapids, George (Shannon) Canas of Minneapolis, Minn., and Steve Canas of Cedar Rapids; and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Apostolos and Konstantina Kanakopoulos; four brothers; and a sister.
