Darlene Sophia Hulse, 92, passed away at Cedar Manor Nursing Home in Tipton on Saturday, May 6, 2017. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wedneday, May 10, at Chapman Funeral Home in Clarence. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 11, at St. John's United Church of Christ in Clarence with the Rev. David Lorenzen officiating. Burial will follow at St. John's Cemetery.
Darlene was born Aug. 29, 1924, in Lowden, Iowa, to Carl and Christine (Deerberg) Prange. She married Merlin Hulse on Aug. 12, 1945. They farmed south of Clarence on the family farm.
Survivors include her husband, Merlin; daughter, Pat (Bruce) Vincent of St. Louis, Mo.; son, Denny (Candice) of Clarence; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.
Darlene was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her family always came first. She loved to cook and bake, entering many baked goods at the county fair. Her angel food cakes were purple ribbon winners. She loved to quilt for both family and friends. She also loved to dance, tend to her garden and play cards.
Darlene was active in United Church of Christ Kings Daughters Aid, Women's Fellowship, Farm Bureau women and the Legislative Ladies League. She received the Iowa Porkettes Bell Ringer Award and was a past Cedar County 4-H volunteer.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a great-grandson.
Memorials may be given to Camp Courageous or St. Luke's Hospital Foundation.
