CEDAR RAPIDS — Shots fired Friday morning damaged two residences in southeast Cedar Rapids and forced a nearby school to lock its doors.
Officers responded at 10:12 a.m. to an area between the 600 and 800 blocks of 15th Street SE for reports of gunfire, the Cedar Rapids Police Department said.
When they arrived, officers found two homes had been struck by gunfire. Officers also found several spent shell casings.
According to witness statements, a suspect fled the area on foot. Police said the person has not been located.
Police said McKinley STEAM Academy, 620 10th St. SE, was secured — meaning all the doors were locked and no one was allowed to enter or exit — for an unspecified period.
Police said no injuries were reported and the incident remains under investigation.
Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact the Cedar Rapids Police Department at (319) 286-5491 or Linn County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-CS-CRIME.
Police said witness information has been helpful recently in this and several other cases.
