A police satellite station in southeast Cedar Rapids is now expected to open by the middle of September.
Police Lt. Charles Mincks said last week it took longer than expected for office furniture to be ordered to site, at 1501 First Ave. SE. Carpet has been installed, and the furniture is expected late this week or early next week.
Police Chief Greg Graham had hoped to get the substation opened by summer, but that timetable ran afoul of state laws requiring the city to take bids for supplies and services for the project.
Prompted in part by the March 29 assault on Officer Tim Davis about two blocks away, the substation will house other city services. In addition to police business, neighborhood residents may pay city bills at the substation.
Police, fire and city code enforcement officials are working out of a temporary substation at Second Avenue and 15th Street SE until the permanent office opens.
