DONALD SPEAS

Donald R. Speas, 78, of Kalona, died Thursday, Nov. 6, 2014, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. His body has been cremated and a private family burial will be held at a later date. A general memorial fund has been established.

Donald Ray Speas was born March 14, 1936, in Kalona, Iowa, the son of Lester "Bud" and Mabel (Hartsock) Speas. He graduated from Kalona High School in 1954 and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1958. He served his country in the Army until 1960 when he transferred to the U.S. Army Reserve where he served until 1964. On April 7, 1963, he was united in marriage to Glennis Slaubaugh at the Kalona United Methodist Church. Don worked for the city of Kalona from 1969 to 1998. He was a member of the Kalona Volunteer Fire Department from 1968 to 1993. Don enjoyed watching Hawkeye football and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Glennis of Kalona; two sons, Jim Speas of Kalona and Stacy (Mary) Speas of Kalona; one granddaughter, Brandi Speas of Houston, Texas; and one sister, Carolyn Petersen of Stanwood, Iowa.
Preceding Don in death were his parents and one brother-in-law, Tony Petersen.
