Gloria M. McCarthy, 93, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2018, at Mercy Hospital. Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, St. Patrick Catholic Church, by the Rev. Ivan Nienhaus. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery. A Rosary will be recited at 9 a.m. at the church, where friends may visit with the family following. Teahen Funeral Home is serving the family
Gloria is survived by three daughters, Margaret (Doug) Kimball and Patricia McCarthy, both of Cedar Rapids, and Janet McCarthy (John Evans) of Minneapolis, Minn.; son-in-law, Michael Ward of London, England; sister-in-law, Alice McCarthy of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Michael (Teri) Kimball, Jennifer (Terry) Pflughaupt, Mark (Cheryl) Kimball, Julia (Scott) Lindsey, Aimee (Joe) Heck, Adam (Megan) Trachta and Ian Evans; six great-grandsons; and one-great-great-granddaughter.
Gloria was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; daughter, Teresa McCarthy Ward; brother, Roger Rose; and brother-in-law, Leo McCarthy.
Gloria was born on April 1, 1924 in Duluth, Minn., the daughter of Arnold and Jane Dryke Rose. She married Robert McCarthy on June 5, 1948, at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Robert died in 1993. Gloria was a Navy WAVE Veteran of WWII.
Gloria enjoyed life. She had a great curiosity and thirst for knowledge of the world. After her kids were grown, she went back to school and earned her Associate of Arts from Kirkwood Community College.
She was a voracious reader. She always had her nose in a book, whether it was a novel, biography or history of another place. Travel for her was more than a vacation, it was a chance to experience and learn. First she journeyed with her husband, and in later years with her friends and daughters. Her bag was always packed and ready to go! She went all over the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii, also throughout Europe and even to Australia. Gloria encouraged her daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to travel, see and enjoy the world that God created. Gloria was young-thinking and fun-loving. She liked to experience life and often included everyone in her adventure. Her inspiration and zest for life will be greatly missed by all.
