McDowell-Petersen, Muriel 'Murt'

Muriel “Murt” McDowell-Petersen, 60, of Boone and formerly of Center Point, died Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Services at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Central Christian Church in Boone. A graveside service and burial will be at 1 p.m. Friday in the Center Point Cemetery in Center Point. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Schroeder Memorial Chapel, Sixth and Marshall, Boone, with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Visitation continues from 10 a.m. to service time Thursday at the church.

Murt was born Dec. 21, 1948 in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Ivan and Charlotte (Horak) Newland. She graduated from Center Point High School in 1967. Murt worked in the banking business after high school. She moved to Boone in 1980, and was employed as a teller at Citizens National Bank, until 1988. She most recently worked as deputy treasurer in the Motor Vehicle Department at the Boone County Courthouse. On Sept. 21, 2007, she married Thomas “Tom” Petersen in Boone.

Murt is survived by her husband, Tom of Boone; two sons, Chad (Rachel) McDowell of Boone, and Brian (Monica) McDowell of Ankeny; her mother, Charlotte Newland of Center Point; a brother, Roger (Mary) Newland of Marshalltown; a stepson, John Petersen of Des Moines; a stepdaughter, Angie (Shawn) Dose of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and eight grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Memorials may be given to the McDowell Memorial Fund.
