Craig D. Petersen, 67, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2017, at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton with the Rev. Stephen K. Preus officiating. Interment will be in Mount Auburn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. Sixth St., Vinton. A memorial fund has been established.
Craig was born May 22, 1950, in Waterloo, to Donald and Ethel (Dengler) Petersen. He graduated from Washington High School in 1968. Craig served in the U.S. Navy from 1968 to 1970. On July 19, 1969, Craig was united in marriage to Pam Kiesel at Zion Lutheran Church in Dysart.
Craig worked for 31 years at the John Deere plant in Waterloo, retiring in 2004. He then was a rural mail carrier in the Mount Auburn area for nine years and later was a driver for Benton County Transportation for nine years.
Craig was a longtime and active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton. He also was a member of the Mount Auburn American Legion Post No. 177 and enjoyed helping with events at the legion hall.
Craig very much enjoyed fishing with his family and trips to Whaley's Resort in Minnesota. He loved to travel with his wife, and especially his grandchildren. Craig liked being outside and doing yard work, planting trees and flowers.
In addition to his wife, Pam, Craig is survived by his son, Gene (Renee) Petersen; his grandchildren, Ashley (Treigh) McGlaughlin and Dalton Petersen; his great-grandchildren, Addyson, Oaklyn and Kingslee, all of Vinton; his sister, Karen Peshel of Cedar Rapids; his brother, Dale (Andrea) Petersen; his brother-in-law, Larry Kiesel of Burlington; his sister-in-law, Sherry Raitt of Evansdale; his sister-in-law, Mary Swanger of Clutier; his uncle, Vernon (Mildred) Dengler of Traer; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Ethel Petersen; and his brother-in-law, Terry Raitt.
