Dennis Lee Schrader, 71, of Delmar, died peacefully Friday evening, June 9, 2017, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born Aug. 24, 1945, in Maquoketa, to Glen "Deke" and Martha (Bennis) Schrader. Dennis lived most of his life in the Welton area. He attended Welton School until it closed, graduated from DeWitt High School in 1964 and, later, from Clinton Community College. Dennis married Maureen Trimble on July 2, 1966, at Assumption Catholic Church, Charlotte. He owned and operated Schrader Painting, working in the surrounding area painting houses, farm buildings and many of the local churches.
Dennis was a lifelong member of St. Anne Catholic Church, Welton, until it closed in 2014, at which time he became a member of Ss. Philip and James Catholic Church, Grand Mound. He was a longtime member of the Welton Volunteer Fire Department. Dennis loved and cherished his horses. He spent his lifetime buying, caring for and selling them. Dennis sold horses all over the United States, especially in Macon, Mo., and Cannon Falls, Minn. He also sold them internationally in England, Germany and Mexico.
Dennis was a member of the American Quarter Horse and American Paint Horse associations. He enjoyed mushroom hunting, playing cards, visiting the casinos, and following the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs and Central Sabers. He loved spending time and the holidays with his family.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Maureen; their children, Amy (Greg) Haack of DeWitt, Rick (Michelle) Schrader of Cedar Rapids and Rachel (Jim) VanderHeiden of DeWitt; grandchildren, Amber, Jared and Nolan Haack, Catherine and Charlie Schrader and Hannah and Jake VanderHeiden; his brother, Charlie (Mary) Schrader of Davenport; his mother-in-law, Rosalie Trimble of DeWitt; and numerous caring in-laws, nieces and nephews.
Preceding Dennis in death were his parents; an infant sister, Evelyn; his father-in-law, Leo Trimble; sister-in-law, Rosie Biel; and niece, Stephanie Shumaker.
The family will receive relatives and friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 13, with a vigil service at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 14, at Ss. Philip and James Catholic Church, Grand Mound, with the Rev. Father Francis Odoom officiating. Burial will be at St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery, Delmar.
Pallbearers will be Virgil Schroeder, Ryan Geffers, Tom Hughes, Joe Connelly, Kye Bennis, Mark Menke, JP Crowley and Justin Dailey. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Simon, Jim Connelly, Clint Petersen, Tom Gannon, Kenny Geffers, Bill Schrader, Al Schrader, Kevin Marik and Larry Hill.
