Lelon E. "Lee" Schmidt, 90, a resident of Normal, Ill., formerly a longtime
resident of Davenport, died Monday, July 21, 2014, at Heritage Manor, Normal. Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 24, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, 4105 N. Division, Davenport. Burial will take place in the National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home, downtown Davenport. There will be an additional visitation from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday in the gathering space at the church.
Lelon Edward Schmidt was born Dec. 1, 1923, in Lost Nation, Iowa, a son of Peter and Susie (Sorenson) Schmidt. He was united in marriage to Mae E. Van Vuren Roe on Sept. 13, 1947. They had shared over 65 years of marriage together. She preceded him in death on June 13, 2013. Lee proudly served our county in the U.S. Navy during World War II and felt privileged to attend an Honor Flight.
Lee had been an optician with Bausch & Lomb Optical, retiring after 40 years of service. He enjoyed woodworking and was proud of his success in building two houses from the ground up. He was a member of Our Lady of
Victory and the Moose Lodge. Lee cherished his time with family and friends but happily dedicated much of his time helping to raise his grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church or OSF Hospice, 211 N. Landmark Dr., Suite D3, Normal, IL 61761.
Lee is survived by his children and their spouses, Mike (Cathy) Schmidt, Carbondale, Ill., Greg (JoAnne) Schmidt, Jacksonville, Fla., Jim (Patricia) Schmidt, East Moline, Ill., and Yvonne (Dave) Fahringer, Lexington, Ill.; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; his brothers, Merlyn Schmidt, Clinton and Delbert Schmidt, Des Moines; his brother-in-law, Bud Roe, Nevada.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife. May they rest in peace.
