Fred A. Gordon Sr., 80, passed away peacefully Thursday, Oct. 2, 2014, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Memorial gathering: 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Private family burial: Pleasant Grove Cemetery, McGregor, at a later date.
Survivors include daughter, Julie (Paul) Tande of Marion and grandson, Joshua Weber; sons, Fred (Mary) Gordon Jr., of Troy, Texas, Jeff (Tami) Gordon of Cedar Rapids and Tami's daughter, Tisha Evans; life partner of 29 years, Kathy Shepherd; her daughter, Christine (Ron) Tharp, and grandchildren, Rachael, Kyle and McKenna; and great-granddaughter, Ramie, all of Cedar Rapids; brother, Don (Lee) Gordon of Marquette; special niece, Nancy (Bill) Wheeler of Cedar Rapids; and many other nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Jenny and Alice; and two brothers, Bud and Joe.
Fred was born in Marquette, Iowa, on April 3, 1934, to Glen and Josephine (Loetz) Gordon. He graduated from Marquette Independent High School as the senior class valedictorian. After high school, Fred joined the Army and upon discharge went to work for the Milwaukee Railroad. Fred married Kathleen Blume on Sept. 20, 1958; they later divorced. He retired from the railroad after 40 years of service.
In his spare time, Fred enjoyed fishing, gardening, bird watching and feeding the birds.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha.
