Alberta Mary Van Nest, 100, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, Sept. 25, 2016, at Village Ridge in Marion. Memorial services will be at at 1 p.m. Thursday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Inurnment at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories Mausoleum Columbarium. Arrangements entrusted to Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Survivors include her three children, Hal E. (Jule) Van Nest Jr. of Moline, Ill.; daughters, Patricia A. Griffin of Charles City and Sandra K. (Roger) Giegerich of Sebring, Fla.; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. She also is survived by her sisters, Sister Dolores McAllister of Dubuque, Rita Hoffmann of Greendale, Wis., and Cecelia (Joseph) Koob of Monticello; and one brother, Joseph (Marge) McAllister Jr. of Palmetto, Fla.
Alberta was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Hal E. Van Nest Sr., in July 2007. They would have celebrated 72 years of marriage in August 2007. She also was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Angeline McAllister; four sisters, Kathleen McAllister, Irene Huber, Loretta Minton and Margaret Bakey; and six brothers, James, Donald, Paul, Robert, Charles and Thomas.
Alberta Van Nest was born Aug. 17, 1916, at home in Cascade, Iowa, the beloved daughter of Joseph and Angeline McAllister. She was united in marriage to Hal E. Van Nest Sr. on Aug. 17, 1935 at Nativity Catholic Church in Dubuque. Alberta worked for many years at JC Penney in Dubuque and then at Me Too Grocery Store for 22 years in Cedar Rapids. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion and a member of the Womans Club of Cedar Rapids, former member of St. Luke's, Mercy Medical Center and Camp Courageous Bridge Clubs. She also volunteered for 14 years at St. Luke's and six years at Mercy Medical Center.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother and friend of many. She will be missed by her family and friends.
