To the editor:
Now that the dust has settled from the mid-term elections, fiscal reform needs to be one of the top priorities for our newly elected representatives. Our fiscal challenges are so large that all parts of the budget must be involved in fiscal reform. Leaving some things 'off the table” will encourage efforts to move other things 'off the table” - this kind of planning leads to failure. When dealing with the federal budget, we need a plan that is balanced, spreading the sacrifice across most of the population and all major parts of the budget. Voters should beware of lopsided plans with no hope of substantial bipartisan support. The Simpson-Bowles plan or the somewhat similar Rivlin-Domenici plan, are both examples of proposals that are reasonable, comprehensive and bipartisan. Join me in asking our newly elected officials to put a priority on fixing the debt and fiscal reform.
