Coralville received a big boost Monday to its flood-mitigation plans.
The city has been awarded nearly $7.2 million in federal funds to elevate the CRANDIC railroad behind Highway 6 and build a new railroad bridge, Sens. Chuck Grassley and Tom Harkin announced.
Water went over the tracks during last year's flood and wreaked havoc on a major thoroughfare and business district.
The money comes on top of $2.5 million in federal funds the city had already received for the project. The work is estimated to cost $9.6 million overall, City Administrator Kelly Hayworth said.
The CRANDIC rail line, shown at left in this 2001 file photo, will be elevated with the help of a federal grant announced Monday.
