William "Bill" L. Mayfield, 96, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2014, at Hiawatha Care Center, Hiawatha. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at St. Matthew Catholic Church, by the Rev. David Beckman. Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids, with a vigil at 7 p.m. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include three children and their families: Richard (Carol) Mayfield; their children, Richard (Lee), with great-grandson, Theodore; Dana Mayfield McLaughlin, with great-granddaughters, Caroline and Meghan; Jill (Sean) Mayfield Wolfrey, with great-grandchildren, Jacob and Hannah; Molly (Brian) Mayfield Tanner, with great-granddaughter, Addie.
Michael (Rochelle) Mayfield; their children, Emily (Bobby) Mayfield Wenger, with great-granddaughter, Lily; and Kevin.
Elizabeth (Clint) Wasendorf; their children, Ryan (Valerie) Sampica, with great-grandson, David; Nicholas (Andrea) Sampica and Chloe Wasendorf.
Bill was born May 13, 1918, in Strahan, Iowa, the son of John and Gladys (Irvin) Mayfield. He served in the U.S. Army. On Feb. 19, 1944, he married Carmela O'Toole in Cedar Rapids. Bill worked at Iowa Manufacturing, Iowa Manufacturing Credit Union and later at the Third Avenue Parkade for the city of Cedar Rapids.
He was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church and the Holy Name Society.
Bill will be remembered as an avid and loyal Iowa Hawkeye fan, and for his monthly column of jokes, Bill's Corner, published in the resident newsletter at Village Ridge.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Carmela; and two brothers, John W. "Jack" and Dean.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the donors' favorite charity.
