FORT DODGE — They'd recently and repeatedly been in the mix.
Saturday, the girls from Elkader Central reached the top.
A perennial state contender, Central claimed its first Class 1A girls' championship at the state cross country meet at Lakeside Golf Course.
'We'd been close,' senior Haley Schroeder said. 'We've been racing hard for the last few years. Today, our dreams finally came true.'
Schroeder placed fourth and freshman Ciera Deitschler was seventh as the Warriors compiled 66 points. Pekin was the runner-up with 76.
Durant's Alyssa Williams was the individual champion in 19:12. Schroeder finished in 19:59. Hanna Hess of Edgewood-Colesburg was sixth.
Nodaway Valley took the boys' title convincingly. The Wolverines scored 61 points are were followed by Pekin (119) and Iowa City Regina (124).
Regina's girls were fourth. Last year, both Regina teams were disqualified from state-qualifying-meet competition because of a rules infraction; they were on the course at Solon after meet assignments were disclosed.
'We were really pumped to run,' said Nate Green, a sophomore who placed ninth. 'I was glad to have one last race with the seniors.
'We have a history of running well at state, and we wanted to do our best to keep that going.'
Ogden's Andrew Stumbo was the individual boys' champ in 16:33. Keiffer Sexton of Highland was the top area boy, finishing fifth.
Molly Blondin led the Regina girls; she was 13th.
North-Linn and Starmont were seventh and eighth in the girls' race.
