Velma Jean Batey, 81, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 2015.
Velma was born Dec. 15, 1933, in Cedar Rapids to James Wesley and Agnes Frances (Doupnik) Rissmiller. She graduated from Wilson High School. She was married to Charles Leo Batey on Oct. 29, 1955, in Jeffersonville, Ind. They were later divorced. To this union two daughters were born.
Velma worked as a Wal-mart associate for 22 years until her retirement in 2006.
She enjoyed crocheting blankets for all of her great-grandchildren and watching her favorite TV shows. She loved to chat and be around people.
She is survived by her daughters, Vanessa (John) May of Des Moines and Christine (Gregory) Moser of Center Point; grandchildren, Stephanie (James) Howard of Center Point, Nicholas (Jessica) Moser of Marion, Laura (John) Crouthamel of Des Moines and Jonathan May of Des Moines; and great-grandchildren, Autumn Marie Moser, Genevieve Kate Moser, Haiden Nicole Howard, Bailey Madison Crouthamel, Jackson Ian Crouthamel and Peyton Jean Crouthamel.
Velma was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Raymond Dean Rissmiller; and her beloved teacup chihuahua, Precious.
