DAVID MICHAEL WEST
Cedar Rapids
David Michael West, 63, of Cedar Rapids, died on Friday, June 15, 2018, at UnityPoint-St. Luke's Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
David's memorial service will be held Saturday, June 23, 2018, at Mount Mercy University, from noon to 3 p.m. at the University Center Commons, 1330 Elmhurst Dr. NE, Cedar Rapids. Entrusted with the arrangements is Iowa Cremation.
David is survived by his children: a son, John West of Cedar Rapids, and a daughter, Kelly (Chad) Siems of Shellsburg, Iowa; former wife, Deb West; his grandchildren, Cole, Josie and Jordyn Siems; siblings, James (Janey) West, Lee Meyer and Marla Stanley; a sister-in-law, Shawn West; as well as a multitude of nieces and nephews.
Dave was preceded in death by his father, John T. West; mother, Ruby (Abel) West; two brothers, Bob West and Jack West; and a sister, Cecelia "Kay" Otterbeck.
David was born in Quincy, Ill., on May 15, 1955, living in Canton, Mo., until he was five years old. At that time, his mother and siblings moved to Cedar Rapids, where he resided for the remainder of his life. He married Deborah Hauskins in September 1975, they had two children.
He worked to survive, but truly found his passion in being a well-read handyman, woodworking, playing pool and poker and spending time with his family. Most recently, he was employed with the City of Cedar Rapids in Housing Services, where he had the opportunity to serve his community and local non-profit organizations.
He graduated from Kirkwood Community College with an associate's degree in paralegal studies and had aspirations of obtaining a bachelor's degree in business administration from Coe College, but was unable to graduate.
Dave was known for being humble, but could be stubborn, opinionated and gregarious. He loved his family beyond comparison. He enjoyed spirited political conversations with his son-in-law, but in the end always agreed to disagree!
In lieu of gifts, memorial donations may be made to the Catherine McCauley Center in Cedar Rapids in David's name.
There is a special place in Heaven for fathers like you. Happy Father's Day, Dad. We love you!
