Flaherty, Luke Joseph
Luke Joseph Flaherty, 71, died Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics of complications related to a stroke. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, at The Newman Center, 104 E. Jefferson, Iowa City, with the Rev. Anthony Bruno officiating. Inurnment will be in the columbarium at Oakland Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Public Library Friends Foundation, Friends of the Animal Center Foundation or to the University of Iowa Foundation for the Palliative Care Unit at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Luke is survived by his wife, Susan E. Sweeney; his sister, Mary Ann Flaherty, Waterbury; three brothers, William of Cohasset, Mass., George, Waterbury, and Kevin, Torrington, Conn.; his brothers and sisters-in-law, John P. Sweeney, Neola, Barbara A. Morgan, Kansas City, Mo., Brian M. and Dee Sweeney, both of Tucson, Ariz.; numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews; and his beloved golden retriever, Quinn.
