Strong storms knock down trees, power lines
The line of thunderstorms that rolled across Eastern Iowa Sunday night brought down its share of limbs and power lines, but there were no reports of widespread damage.
The storm that blew through Cedar Rapids about 8 p.m. packed winds gusting to the 70-mph range, according to the National Weather Service. The wind brought down a large tree limb that blocked 17th Street SE between Fourth and Fifth avenues.
Police and weather spotters reported many large trees and branches down in Keystone, but no injuries were reported.
“There's places here and there with individual trees that are down, and power lines, but no widespread outages,” said Scott Hansen, Benton County Emergency Management director.
A weather service spotter west of Norway reported an 85-mph gust about 7:45 p.m. The only tornado report came from a spotter in Webster in Keokuk County, who reported a funnel cloud over the town about 7:30 p.m. The funnel didn't touch down.
Starting about 1 p.m., Cedar Rapids received 0.39 inch of rain through 9:00. No rain fell Sunday in Iowa City, the weather service said.
A spotter near Marengo reported 0.6 inch of rain fell in 45 minutes, starting about 7:15 p.m.
Alliant Energy reports about 1,400 customers without power in Linn County.
