Hodina, Lester H.
Lester H. Hodina, 88, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at Higley Mansion from a brief illness. As per Lester's wishes, private family services will be held in Czech National Cemetery. Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids is assisting the family.
Lester was born March 2, 1924, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Bohumil and Agnes (Morek) Hodina. He graduated from Wilson High School in 1941. During his time in high school, he was active in track and was the captain of the basketball team. Following high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy. While in the Navy he was involved in many invasion landings, including North Africa, Italy, and France, and was awarded the Purple Heart. He worked for Cherry-Burrell as a machinist for many years until his retirement. Lester enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, and slow-pitch softball. In later life he enjoyed going to the casino.
Lester is survived by his son, Tom Hodina of Waukon; brother, Milo Hodina of Cedar Rapids; sisters, Evelyn (Everett) Mack of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Lucille (Cliff) Netolicky of Cedar Rapids; as well as nieces and nephews; and a special companion, Theresa Kindle of Cedar Rapids.
Lester was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Mary Regan of Waukon.
The family would like to express a sincere thank you to the staff at Higley Mansion, Hospice of Mercy, and to Terri Davies for their loving care for Lester.
